Keeping Boyfriend's Ears Warm Since 2006

I knit a simple stockinette cap for my boyfriend last winter. He wore it frequently, especially when shoveling snow; however, I knew I could create a better-looking, better-fitting hat for him. This past Christmas, I included two skeins of Mission Falls 1824 wool in his stocking, and I told him that I'd knit him any type of hat he preferred, and he asked for a ribbed cap.

I present to you the Boyfriend Hat:

Yarn: Mission Falls 1824 Wool, 100% merino superwash, 2 skeins (with about a fifth of a skein leftover), color 004 - a beautiful charcoal grey
Needles: US size 8 (5mm) sixteen-inch circulars and dpns
Pattern: My own, see below
Design/knit time: January 5-12, 2007, which included ripping and re-knitting the crown a couple times

I'm proud of my hat. I love the ribs and the decreases. I also love this yarn. It's yummy - super soft and spongey. Best of all, my boyfriend likes it (yay!).

My pattern is very basic, but I think the decreases are alluring, so here's my pattern to share....

The Boyfriend Hat

This pattern is designed and owned by me. Feel free to use the pattern for personal use, but please do not reprint or distribute this without my permission.

Note: I had to re-write the pattern due to problems using Blogger to edit this post when I fixed the picture links.

Cast on 100 stitches on the circular needles (or use the double-pointed needles for the entire hat) and join to knit in the round. I used a cable cast on because I like how it looks. If knitting for a larger or smaller head circumference, add or subtract multiples of ten stitches (for example, 110, 120, or 90 stitches), and work the pattern the same.

Every row until the decreases: *K3, P2; repeat from * until the end of row

Knit the above ribbing pattern for 5.5" inches before starting the decreases for a hat that just barely covers the tops of ears (like in the pictures). Knit at least another inch for a hat that covers the ears. Larger and smaller heads might need a longer or shorter hat before the decreases.  For reference, my boyfriend's head (in the pictures) has a 23.5" circumference.

Decreases:

Row 1: *K3, P2, K2tog, K1, P2; repeat from * until end of row (90 sts remain)

Row 2: *K3, P2, K2tog, P2; repeat from * until end of row (80 sts remain)

Row 3: *K3, P2, P2tog, P1; repeat from * until end of row (70 sts remain)

Row 4: *K3, P2, P2tog; repeat from * until end of row (60 sts remain)

Row 5: *K3, P1, P2tog; repeat from * until end of row (50 sts remain)

You have now decreased every other rib out of the ribbing pattern. (If you are using a sixteen-inch circular needle, remember that you will need to switch to double-pointed needles when you cannot fit the stitches on your needle any longer.)

Row 6: *K2tog, K1, P2; repeat from * until end of row (40 sts remain)

Row 7: *K2tog, P2; repeat from * until end of row (30 sts remain)

Row 8: * K2tog, P1; repeat from * until end of row (20 sts remain)

Row 9: *K2tog; repeat from * until end of row (10 sts remain)

Row 10: *K2tog; repeat from * until end of row (5 sts remain)

Cut yarn, weave through remaining 5 stitches to close hole at top, and weave in the ends. You now have a ribbed hat perfect for your very own boyfriend (or husband... or friend... or relative... or yourself).

Love the hat! I made one for my husband that looked sort of like this, but he lost it! And then I lost the pattern, so I put off making him a new one. Thanks to you I can start one! :)

That's one very slick and stylish hat, perfect for my college-age sons. Thanks for the pattern.
And how tall is "freakishly tall"?
(I'm average-ly short, and middle-agedly plump); just curious.

I made this for my brother for Christmas. Thanks!

This pattern is quite lovely. I knit it the first time, but after doing the ribbing to 5.5 inches and then doing the decreases.. I found it incredibly short. I'm redoing it and adding a couple inches in length.

So, as I was scanning through hat patterns on Ravelry, asking my husband what he'd like, we found this pattern. It's a winner, and I can't wait to make it for the meathead :-)

Thanks for sharing. My son (leaving for college next month) will love this hat. It's the only thing he actually asked me to make for him!

I particularly like the free part. I hope that at some point in my knitting career I can publish a really cool FREE pattern.

This is an awesome pattern. Finished it in a day and added a stripe. Also, I ended up doing it 7's and casting on 120 but it still worked out perfectly. This will be my new go to hat pattern.

Thanks

I specifically wanted to do a 3x2 ribbed hat for the men folk on my Christmas list this year and wasn't sure how I wanted to handle the decreases; I hit the internet with a mission of finding the perfect decrease and happened upon this pattern. I didn't imagine I would REALLY find the PERFECT decrease, but boy did I ever! Thank you.

Hi - I'm loving this hat and have a question: if I'm adding more stiches (e.g. 120 instead of 100 cast on), how would I adjust the decreases?

My husband has a big head and I'd like to knit him this hat in the next few days!

Thanks so much :) Kelly

Stephanie said...

I'm glad everyone likes the pattern.

If you want to CO 120 sts, follow the same decrease pattern (but ignore how many sts remain at the end of each row). On the last row of decreases, you will have 7 sts remaining instead of 5.

MJB said...

Stephanie what gauge should I be aiming for? I tend to knit loosely and I'm worried that it will turn out too big.

Thanks for coming up with the perfect hat. It is the only one my bf wants out of the hundreds of patterns online.

Stephanie, I simply adore this pattern and have made it 4 times. I'm about to make it a 5th time with Ironstone Colorchanges in purple.

My method: use a heavier yarn, knitted cast on method, and 90 sts with US 9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles (DPN).

Thank you for sharing such a great pattern -- no errors, easy to follow, looks great when you're done...and the top shaping is so clever.

HI Stephanie I'm currently making this for my husband and I am at the transition phase where I need to transfer to DPN's. What length DPN do you recommend. I am new to knitting and this is only my second project so I need to go out and buy some needles but I don't want to get the wrong one. Thanks for the pattern!

Stephanie said...

Hi, Yazmena. I think I used 6-7" long dpns, and if I remember correctly, the stitches fit comfortably on them when I first switched to them.

Cashew said...

I've kitted so many hats for my husband that are too small. My daughter-in-law also has a large head and I want to make this for her too. What size is your boyfriend's head - that'll give me an idea of how many stitches I need. Thanks.

Stephanie said...

Hey, my boyfriend's head is 23.5" around (just above the ears).

Amanda said...

I love your hat! Since Im a beginning knitter I was wondering how many double pointed needles I need to use for this pattern? The package came with 5 needles so I wasnt sure... Also can I do the whole thing on dpn or do I need to get a circular needle for the beginning? Thanks for the help, cant wait for my boyfriend to wear it!!!

Stephanie said...

To Amanda: Yep, you can knit the whole hat on dpns. I used 4 dpns, but you could also use 5. Or you could use 5 dpns to start with then switch to 4 dpns when you get to the decreases.

Hello!

I'm making a website for Finnish knitters to provide patterns that people love and would like to try them, but who find English language too hard to follow.
I've taken your pattern "A hat Fit for a Boyfriend" from Raverly, and translated it to Finnish.

So here's the question: Can I publish your knitting pattern in Finnish language in 2 non-commercial websites?
www.friikkipirkot.blogspot.com and the one I'm writing above (not ready yet, because I haven't translated enough patterns. ^^ )

After pattern there's always mentioned a link to the original pattern and translators name.

I really like the look of this hat. i added some color to just the ribs for a 3/4" strip. Turned out cool. I highly recommend adding at least an inch to the work before starting the decrease. Otherwise the hat just covers to top of the ears.

Unknown said...

if i knit an extra inch before decreasing, will i run out of yarn if i only have 2 skeins? i am using the same mission falls yarn.

Stephanie said...

Amanda: If you knit an extra inch, you should have enough yarn from two skeins of Missions Falls wool. I've knit the hat longer a couple times, and I had plenty of yarn leftover.

What is a good substitute for Mission Falls 1824 Wool? Something machine washable and dry on low?

Kimfrank said...

Hey Stephanie,

I'm new to knitting and I've tried to find out what you mean by "p2, k2tog" Is this one and the same step?

Thanks, Kim

Stephanie said...

Susan: I don't use machine washable yarn very often (except for fibers like cotton), so I don't know a good substitute. Sorry! I know Cascade 220 has a superwash wool, but it's definitely thinner, so you would need to cast on more stitches (in multiples of 10) to create a hat that fits the same size head.

----------

Kimfrank: "P2" and "K2tog" are two different steps. As a generalization, in knitting patterns, commas separate each step.

P2 means to purl two in a row (in other words, purl one stitch then purl the next stitch).

K2tog means to knit two stitches together - this is a decrease. It decreases one stitch. The decreases in this hat pattern are used to form the cap shape at the top of the hat.

I suggest looking at knittinghelp.com for help learning how to do different knitting techniques, including increases and decreases. That site has pictures, written directions, and videos. This page shows you how to do various decreases, including K2tog (top left): http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/decreases

I'm knitting myself a hat using this pattern right now! I taught myself how to knit watching videos on Youtube and then gave it up for a while because I didn't like DPNs, but with cold weather arriving I really wanted a new hat so I pulled the needles back out and tried using 2 circular needles to do the small diameter at the top and it was much easier! Thanks for the great pattern.

Absolutely wonderful. I made this hat for my husband and he adores it! I will definitely make one for myself and every single boys in my family (they all want one, made longer it covers the ears PERFECTLY).

Hi Stephanie! Thanks for posting this pattern. It looks like the perfect thing for my boyfriend, and he went with me to help pick out the yarn today at a LYS. The skein we got is 160 yds long and he has a big head, 25". In addition, he wants it to cover his ears. Do you think 160 yds will be enough? Would you recommend adding the extra 10 stitches to fit around his head, or do you think 100 stitches will stretch? The yarn we got is a wool/cotton blend, if that makes any difference. This will be the first hat I've knit!

Stephanie said...

Is your yarn 160 yards per 100 grams of a 50-50 wool cotton blend? I can only guess here... but I would guess that a wool/cotton blend would stretch more after the first wash than a wool yarn, so you might be able to cast on 100 stitches, but I think I would try 110 sts first. I definitely suggest adding AT LEAST an inch to the length of the hat.

Kirsten H said...

Yep, it's 100 grams for approx. 160 yards and it's 55% wool, 45% cotton. Thanks for the tips! I'll give it a try and hope I don't run out of yarn. They only had one hank of this color left in the store.

Andrea said...

I'm glad you (and hopefully the recipients) like the hat pattern! Nope, we're not married, but we are still together. :)

Melissa MacGregor said...

I LOVE this hat! The decreases work out better than any other hat I've ever made! I love that you go all the way down to 5 stitches to pull through. I've seen patterns where you're meant to pull your yarn through 20+ stitches and it always looks a bit weird and is difficult to fully close. Good job! I made this hat over the weekend and it was way too short. I'm working on a twin and this time I started the decreases after 7" of length and it looks / fits (so far) a lot better. Your pattern is my new favorite hat to make! Thank you so much!

Unknown said...

I'm knitting this hat for my boyfriend and I've added 10 extra stitches to the pattern (as I'm still sort of a newbie and quite a tight knitter). Could someone please tell me where in the pattern I am supposed to account for these 10 extra stitches? I've knit and unknit my decrease section three times now and something is still wrong. Everything looks ok until about row 6 of the decreases. By the end of row 6, the pattern states that every other rib should be eliminated, but with these added stitches, that's simply not the case. It's January in the Adirondacks and I gotta keep his ears toasty. . .any advice helps! Thank you, fellow knitters. . . .

Stephanie said...

Noelle, if you started with 110 stitches, at the end of Row 5, you should have 55 stitches remaining. Is that the case?

Unknown said...

Thanks for getting back to me so promptly, Stephanie! Yup. . .55 it is, and every other rib is gone. (4th time's the charm, I guess. ;) ) What now for those remaining 10? Are they just accounted for in all the K2 rows: 9, 10, (11)? Thanks. . .

BFraley83 said...

I viewed this the other day and the decreases made sense, but now this is what it reads:

Row 1: *K3, P2, K2tog, K1, P2; repeat from * until end of row (90 sts remain <-- 100="" 2:="" 3:="" 4:="" 5:="" co="" end="" from="" had="" if="" k2tog="" of="" p1="" p2="" p2tog="" p="" remain="" repeat="" row="" span="" sts="" style="color: black;" until="" you="">1, P2tog; repeat from * until end of row (50 sts remain)

which isn't what I saw the first time and I can't make heads or tails of it. Any suggestions? I love this hat and have knit to the 2nd row of decreases but don't know what to do now.

Stephanie said...

@AtlantaJJ You would work the decrease just as I wrote it except the number of stitches left at the end of each round would be different. Like this...

Starting with 80 stitches

Decreases:

Row 1: *K3, P2, K2tog, K1, P2; repeat from * until end of row (72 sts remain)

This pattern is just what I was looking for - thank you so much for sharing! My own boyfriend asked for a new ribbed hat but I wanted to find something special and this really fits the bill. I just love those decreases!

Hi! What yarn substitutes are people now using since the original suggested yarn is discontinued? Have you made adjustments to the gauge with your substituted yarn? Thank you!

Hello Stephanie! I posted a link to this wonderful pattern in a blog post a few years ago. I'd like to add photos to the post, and I wondered if I could use one of yours? I'd credit you, of course. Thanks so much!

my dear Stephanie

have no words to thank you for this one of a kind , made with love and passion and kindness, hat!!!!

have made it so many times for beloved people around me and always thinking you with gratitude!!!

I have a question....I started the hat with size 4 needles (this time)....

what are your suggestions...should I reach to decrease cm....just as you suggested or a bit more?

and should i follow the decreases' rows or change them?

thank you so much whether you read the message or not!

love from Athens, Greece
